Senior Cost Accountant

JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:

The Senior Cost Accountant is the costing specialist for business operations and accounting, determines and implements cost accounting procedures and methods, creates policy documentation, costing workflow diagrams and accounting procedure documentation. Responsible for the preparation and analysis of cost reports, costing audits, and implementing costing movements in ERP systems. This role reports to the Manager, Corporate Accounting, works highly independent, leads costing project teams and delivers cost planning and analysis to all division leadership. The Senior Cost Accountant is the highest level in the cost accountant group.

 

Essential Functions:

  • Process owner of the company costing methodology. Create a full costing model: purchase of materials, inventory movements, applied labor and overhead rates and final COGS. Evaluates complex business environment by conducting financial assessments of the procurement process, inventory management, overhead schemes, and sales to order processes.
  • Continually monitor and analyze costing results to translate into method improvements which increase accuracy in COGS and inventory value. Including analysis of period vs capital costs.
  • Develop and maintain performance metrics for individual material costs and establish material, labor, and overhead standards.
  • Creates costing budgets and/or forecasts in accordance with business strategic initiatives by analyzing and interpreting budgeting trends, reviewing results of budget and forecasting, coordinating with others to develop, and making recommendations.
  • Hold monthly reviews with division leadership to present costing analysis, budget performance, cost forecasts, material, and labor cost variances. Discussions to yield actionable items for improvements.
  • Monitor and manage all cost accounts in the chart of accounts, for example, Work in Progress and COGS balances. Update cost movements in ERP ensuring costs are posting to the general ledger correctly.
  • Coordinate and conduct inventory physical counts, cycle count, reconcile differences, and make inventory adjustments.
  • Perform monthly closing activities including variance and trend analysis of accounts, preparation of journal entries, reconcile general ledger accounts on a timely basis. Including but not limited to: inventory roll forward analysis and Work-in-process reconciliations.
  • Analyze inventory trends and develop reports which highlight and communicate significant changes and causational business drivers. Develop and implement a recurring process to present a monthly costing analysis report to CFO, VP Corporate Controller & Treasurer, and operations management.
  • Practices self-development and promotes learning in others by proactively providing information, resources, advice, and expertise with coworkers. Building relationships with cross-functional stakeholders.
  • Must be highly organized and able to adapt to competing demands and new responsibilities and adapting to and learning from change, difficulties, and feedback.
  • The lead role in managing cross functional group work for product costing. Leads the development of work plans to meet costing priorities and deadlines, coordinating resources to accomplish priorities and deadlines, collaborating cross-functionally, escalating high priority issues or risks as appropriate, and recognizing and capitalizing on improvement opportunities.
  • Influencing others through technical explanations and examples of costing methods.
  • Must analyze, interpret, and communicate complex technical business and cost accounting matters.

Qualifications:

  • BA/BS in Accounting or Finance
  • Minimum 5 years of cost accounting experience in a standard cost environment
  • Minimum 5 years of cost/manufacturing/distribution experience
  • Experience in product costing, inventory management, variance analysis and financial modeling.
  • Experience in analyzing cost movements in ERP systems (e.g. Oracle, SAP, Netsuite, Dynamics, etc.)
  • Attention to detail and proven ability to develop and follow standard procedures is a requirement.
  • Outstanding technology, analytics and management experience required.
  • Demonstrated analytical abilities and superior critical thinking skills.
  • Excellent written, verbal, and social communication skills.
  • Able to build and deliver effective ad hoc reporting, analysis, and presentations.

 

Salary Range:  $100k-$115k

Physical Demands:

This is a sedentary role; however, some filing is required, which would require the ability to lift files, open filing cabinets and bend or stand on a stool as necessary.

Working Conditions:

This job operates in an administrative office setting. This role routinely uses standards office equipment such as computers, phones, photocopiers and filing cabinets.

Travel:

There is some travel required.
